About our team

We’re looking for a driven and detail-focused Senior Financial Accountant to lead our Financial Accounting Team and ensure the delivery of accurate, high-quality financial statements and reporting. This is a pivotal role in ensuring financial integrity, compliance, and continuous improvement across Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD).

About the Position

As a Senior Financial Accountant, you will manage the Financial Accounting Team and oversee the preparation of timely and accurate monthly and annual financial statements. Working closely with the Manager of Financial Accounting & Reporting, you’ll ensure compliance with NSW Ministry of Health standards, statutory obligations, and audit requirements.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the production of monthly and annual financial reports to strict deadlines

  • Ensuring reconciliation and integrity of the general ledger, including debtors, creditors, accruals, and fixed assets

  • Coordinating and liaising with external auditors, providing clear and accurate responses to queries

  • Implementing improvements to reporting systems to enhance efficiency and quality

  • Managing, mentoring, and developing a high-performing accounting team that embraces change and continuous learning

  • Supporting the development of policies, systems, and procedures across the district.


This is a leadership role with both strategic and operational focus, requiring strong technical expertise alongside the ability to build relationships, manage competing priorities, and deliver results.
 

About You

We are seeking a qualified and experienced financial professional with the ability to thrive in a complex, high-volume environment. You combine strong technical accounting skills with leadership capabilities, and you are passionate about driving improvements and mentoring others.

You will bring:

  • CA or CPA qualification and relevant tertiary education in accounting/finance.

  • Strong knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards and ongoing professional development

  • Extensive experience in financial reporting and accounting services, particularly in producing monthly and annual reports

  • Proven ability to manage teams, foster collaboration, and deliver continuous improvements

  • Strong compliance skills with the ability to navigate evolving regulatory frameworks.

  • A proactive, customer-focused mindset with strong attention to detail.

  • High-level analytical, organisational, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to influence and partner effectively with stakeholders at all levels

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and financial management information systems
