Position Summary

To join the dynamic Paediatric Intensive Care team at the John Hunter Hospital. The position has a mandatory 6-month rotation to the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit with an option to continue for the whole 12 months. Or the other 6 months can be chosen from Adult ICU, Paediatric Emergency, NICU, General Paediatrics and Paediatric subspecialties subject to availability in either 3 month or 6-month terms. This position is ideal for the Adult ICU trainee fulfilling their CICM requirement of PICU time, or the General Paediatric AT to gain experience in Paediatric Critical Care. An opportunity to upskill in various PICU procedures and management strategies.

Where you'll be working

The John Hunter Hospital Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) is one of only three PICUs in NSW. It is the referral centre for critically ill children in the Hunter New England, Mid North Coast and Northern NSW Local Health Districts. John Hunter Children's Hospital offers most paediatric and surgical subspecialities. The hospital contains the only trauma centre in New South Wales outside the Sydney Metropolitan Area and has the busiest Emergency Department

in the state. The JHH PICU is accredited for training with the College of Intensive Care Medicine. JHH PICU has an active education and simulation program. Rotations for trainees include  paediatric emergency, paediatric medicine, subspecialities, NICU or adult ICU/- all subject to availability.

 

What you'll be doing

- Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, management and discharge planning of patients seen in or admitted to the unit within the public health organisation and ensuring that the admission and plans are documented in the medical record.

- The day-to-day assessment and management of the patients in the unit, communicating with them and their family about the nature of their condition and its treatment. All decisions concerning the patient(s) in consultation with their immediate supervisor and team.

- Interacting with various teams involved in the management of the PICU patients

- Many opportunities to upskill in various PICU procedures and assessment, stabilisation and management of the critically unwell paediatric patient.

 

Qualifications

  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Completed at least 4 years practice since graduation with recent experience in Intensive Care, Anaesthesia or Emergency Medicine or Paediatrics.
  3. Demonstrated commitment to a training Program for Intensive Care or Paediatrics.
  4. Demonstrates ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
  5. Ability to demonstrate sound decision making and awareness of when and who to seek further advice.
  6. Demonstrated experience using excellent communication skills (verbal and written) with patients, relatives, medical and nursing colleagues, Allied health, ward staff and administration staff to ensure the appropriate management of the patient and build a positive workplace culture with strong collegial relationships.
  7. Demonstrates teamwork, time management and problem-solving skills as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  8. A professional attitude and flexibility in work role with a preparedness and ability to participate in after- hours rosters to deliver patient care.
