Position 
This position gives opportunity to exposure for a full 12months to consolidate all aspects of Neonatology and the opportunity to gain a wide range of experience in well supported environments. This tertiary referral and teaching hospital is dedicated to provide quality care and clinical services to thousands of patients each year.

Where you'll be working
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at John Hunter Children’s Hospital in Newcastle is one of the largest and busiest NICUs in NSW and the only tertiary NICU outside of Sydney. This brand new 44-bed, state-of-the-art unit provides intensive medical and surgical care to newborns across the Hunter New England and Mid North Coast regions.

What you'll be doing
  The primary role of a Paediatric Advanced Trainee is provision of care for patients and families in both inpatient and outpatient settings, at a level of skill and autonomy consistent with Advanced Training in Paediatrics. The role includes initial assessment of children, rational use of investigations, ongoing management and monitoring progress, and organising timely discharge and appropriate follow up. 

The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a senior member of the Junior Medical Staff within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, he/she is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patient’s care and the Fellow(s).  He/she is responsible for supervision and teaching of Junior Medical Staff on their clinical team, including medical students. The Paediatric Advanced Trainee is a role model for Junior Medical Staff in relation to professional conduct, clinical acumen and communication with patients, families and colleagues (including health professionals and other staff working in hospital and outpatient settings). 

Advanced Trainees will be required to work hours appropriate for the neonatal clinical service, this will include 12hour shift work. Trainees will also be required to work reasonable rostered overtime hours as required by the clinical service; this includes being available for patient handover and on-call duties in accordance with Public Health Medical Officers (State) Award. Advanced Trainees who accept these network positions must comply with the requirements of the training positions they are allocated to across the network, as outlined by the local statement of duties. 


 
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. Registered with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians as an Advanced Trainee or equivalent. 
  3. At least 6 months experience in a level 3 neonatal intensive care unit
  4. Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development. This includes demonstrated ability to teach and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff. Please provide an example.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and a commitment to actively contribute to clinical team. Please provide an example.
  6. Proven verbal and written communication skills and ability to organise, plan and manage competing tasks. Please provide an example.
  7. Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment. Please provide an example.
  8. Demonstrated contribution to quality improvement, hospital services/ committees and research. Please provide an example.
  9. Advanced Paediatric Life Support qualifications or equivalent. Please provide details and upload certification.
