Where you'll be working

Newcastle's John Hunter Hospital is a specialised tertiary referral hospital, teaching hospital and community hospital, providing complex medical, surgical, major trauma for numerous specialties.

We are the busiest ED in the state and a major trauma centre for Northern NSW. John Hunter Hospital is a great place to develop your career as we are delivering services to people of all ages, from birth to childhood and adulthood.

Other regional hospitals part of the HNELHD Network are Belmont, Maitland, Tamworth and Manning Hospital. Other peripheral sites on rotation are Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour

What you'll be doing

The sexual health AT will provide effective management of patients accessing HNELHD clinical sexual health services, as well as providing training, advice or consultancy to internal and external agencies within the LHD, contributing to strategies to reduce HIV and STIs and associated morbidity and mortality, and to improved sexual and reproductive health. 
In this advanced training position, the sexual health AT will be undertaking learning and professional development activities with the aim of progressing to the position of Fellow of the Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine, a chapter of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FAChSHM) OR to extend skills while progressing to Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (FRACGP). 

 
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia.
  2. Demonstrated interest in sexual health medicine and current enrolment or eligibility for Advanced Training in Sexual Health Medicine (completion of RACP Basic Training, or current Fellow of other medical college) OR in sexual health medicine as an extended skills placement as part of vocational training towards FRACGP
  3. Ability to work and communicate effectively with sexual health priority populations including youth, injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, sex industry workers, persons with HIV infection, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  4. Demonstrated ability to work independently within a complex health care setting with proven time management, analytical and reasoning skills, within a supervised clinical environment
  5. Excellent written, verbal and multimedia communication skills, in order to interact effectively with patients, referrers, colleagues and other team members
  6. Excellent academic record commensurate with experience, evidence of on-going learning, teaching activities, potential involvement with projects and research publications
  7. Understanding quality improvement principles, audit, implementation of practice improvement initiatives and commitment to continuing professional development
