Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners eligible for registration in New South Wales for the above position within the Department of Paediatrics, Gosford Hospital, Central Coast Local Health District CCLHD. 

The purpose of this position is for Temporary Specialist leave cover for 6 weeks commencing in January 2026. 

This temporary position offers a valuable opportunity to work within a supportive, experienced paediatric team in a busy regional referral hospital. This role involves providing high-quality specialist paediatric care across the Children’s Ward, Special Care Nursery (SCN), and the Emergency Department, as well as conducting a General Paediatric Outpatient Clinic. The position also includes participation in the on-call and on-take roster, providing consultant cover for acute paediatric and neonatal presentations. The role will include management of the Ontake inpatient cohort either in SCN or Children’s Ward according to the roster. The successful applicant will need to participate in the on-call roster and reside within 20 minutes of Gosford Hospital when on-call.

 

 

Applicants should be a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics and Child Health Division) and / or other specialist recognition as provided for in the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

 

Central Coast is comprised of the twin areas of Gosford and Wyong, positioned between Sydney and Newcastle, which are collectively expected to grow from the current approximate 350,000 (including around 70,000 children) to 450,000 population before 2030. The Local Health District has strong connections with both Royal North Shore Hospital and the University of Newcastle. The hospital supports approximately 3,500 births per year, and its Special Care Nursery provides care for babies from 32 weeks’ gestation and above. The service maintains close collaboration with John Hunter Children’s Hospital and The Children’s Hospital at Westmead for subspecialty referral and retrieval support.

The Paediatric Department provides comprehensive care across:
• Children’s Ward (up to 40 inpatient beds)
• Special Care Nursery (up to 20 cots)
• Paediatric Emergency presentations within a dedicated paediatric pod in the ED and the resuscitation area.
• Outpatient clinics in general and community paediatrics.

 

This position has obligations to Gosford Hospital primarily. Salary and conditions are in accordance with the Staff Specialist (State) Award.

  1. Medical Practitioner registered or able to be registered in Australia, inclusive of an unrestricted 19AB exempted provider number.
  2. Recognised specialist qualifications, Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (Paediatrics and Child Health Division) and / or other equivalent specialist recognition.
  3. Appropriate experience to practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner in Paediatric Medicine including demonstrated experience in acute paediatrics and neonatal care (≥32 weeks’ gestation)..
  4. Ability to work constructively and effectively in a Multidisciplinary team environment, demonstrating excellent interpersonal and communications skills.
  5. Demonstrated willingness and ability to lead and supervise medical and surgical trainees, residents and medical students; eg experience in teaching the management of the deteriorating patient would be advantageous.
  6. Demonstrated interest in quality improvement methodologies.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to Caring for the Coast vision, goals and strategies, with demonstrated behaviours which align to the NSW CORE values and CCLHD Values and Behaviours charter.
