With a population of over 88,000 in the urban area it is one of the fastest growing places in New South Wales. Port Macquarie Base Hospital is a 228 bed level five facility with a 24-hour Emergency Department and a range of specialist services, including intensive care, anaesthetics, cardiology, stroke, respiratory, paediatrics, obstetrics, general medicine, orthopaedics, urology, vascular, general surgery, gastroenterology, oncology, ophthalmology and mental health. This regional hospital has seen a huge growth in presentations and now sees 50,000 per year, with 25% paediatrics, fast track area and short stay unit. The Base Hospital is the main referral centre for the Mid North Coast and is a regional trauma centre. It is also affiliated with the University of New South Wales rural clinical medical school co-located on the hospital campus and Charles Sturt University.

Kempsey District Hospital is a rural hospital 45 minutes from Port Macquarie. It has approximately 30,000 presentations per year (25% paediatrics and 25% indigenous), There is on site medical wards, maternity services, rehab, surgery and mental health. Some patients will be referred to port Macquarie Base Hospital for specialty inpatient care. We strive to deliver a high level of consultant-led care to both our Emergency departments in the Hastings Macleay Clinical Network regardless of the location.

What you'll be doing
 

The primary purpose of an Advanced Trainee in Emergency Medicine is to provide high quality medical care under appropriate supervision to undifferentiated patients presenting to the Emergency Department. 
Trainees undertaking the care of medical patients should ensure that they operate within their own level of expertise within a collaborative clinical care model and to seek consultation with their colleagues when appropriate. Advanced Trainees work under a level of supervision according to their competence in the following activities: 

- Taking a leadership role in coordinating the admission, assessment, management, and discharge planning of patients 
- Communicating assessment and management decisions to other staff involved in the patient’s care 
- Communicating with the patient / family regarding the patient’s condition and management plans 
- Coordinating diagnostic tests and consultations with other medical specialists 
- Arranging the patient discharge process and liaising with local medical officers and community based care modalities for optimal post discharge care  


 
  1. MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
  2. A minimum of three (3) full years of postgraduate experience, including satisfactory completion of at least twelve (12) months of Provisional Training under the ACEM training program
  3. Demonstrated ability to work with appropriate independence, commensurate with a level of a Specialist Trainee, within a supervised complex clinical environment.
  4. Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team in the planning, delivery and coordination of patient care.
  5. Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team.
  6. Demonstrated good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  7. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  8. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self education.
