Eligibility Requirements 

To be eligible for this position you must be a graduate from an Australian or New Zealand AMC accredited medical school.

To apply for a Rural Preferential Recruitment (RPR) Prevocational Training position in NSW you must: 

1. Have successfully completed a Medical Intern Recruitment Application online for a NSW intern position.

2. Meet eligibility and the NSW Health priority list criteria for medical graduate recruitment.

3. Be expected to complete your medical degree this year or have completed your degree in the past two years.

4. Have not previously worked as a doctor.

The role


The purpose of this position is to deliver high quality medical care to patients while developing clinical expertise and practical skills in a complex healthcare environment. The role provides experience across both inpatient and outpatient settings within a public health organisation.

Hunter New England Local Health District (HNELHD) delivers a comprehensive range of public health services across the Hunter, New England, and Lower Mid North Coast regions.

Tamworth Hospital is a major Rural Referral Hospital servicing the North West of NSW, with 288 treatment spaces and a rapidly growing footprint.

In 2026, we’re opening a brand new Mental Health Unit with 37 beds; expanding care across adult, high acuity, youth, and older persons services.

Intern rotations include:

•    Medicine: General, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Nephrology, Endocrinology, Respiratory, Neurology, Oncology, Rehabilitation
•    Surgery: General, ENT, Breast & Endocrine, Colorectal, Ophthalmology, Urology, Orthopaedics 
•    Other: Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Psychiatry, CL Psychiatry and Relief. 

RMO rotations include all of the above, plus:
General Paediatrics Intensive Care (ICU), Pathology, and Anaesthetics. We also offer Primary Care - located in Scone, Moree and Manilla.

 

In this role, you will provide medical care while further developing your clinical capabilities in a supportive and supervised environment. The position is designed to assist graduates of AMC-accredited universities in meeting the requirements for general registration with the Medical Board of Australia.

Working within a multidisciplinary team under senior supervision, you will:
•    Coordinate patient admission, management, and discharge planning 
•    Conduct patient assessments, including history-taking and physical examination 
•    Develop initial management plans and order appropriate investigations 
•    Collaborate with healthcare teams and arrange specialist consultations as needed 
•    Communicate effectively with patients, carers, and colleagues 
•    Facilitate discharge planning and liaise with community-based care providers 
•    Review and follow up on investigation results

You will be expected to practice in accordance with Good Medical Practice: A Code of Conduct for Doctors in Australia, demonstrating professionalism, integrity, compassion, empathy, and respect. As you progress, you will take on increasing responsibility for patient care while recognising your scope of practice and seeking guidance when required.

  1. Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.
  2. Demonstrates ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills (at the required level of competency), judgment and expertise.
  3. Ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.
  4. Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and other members of the health care team.
  5. Good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.
  6. Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
  7. Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.
  8. For Rural Preferential Recruitment: Demonstrated interest in and commitment to the provision of quality healthcare in a rural setting.
